The year 2020 kicked off in celebration for the acoustic community with the opening of the “International Year of Sound” (IYS) at the Grand Amphitheater of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Here in Brazil, the official opening of the International Year of Sound took place on March 6th and was marked by a concert by the Unicamp Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra took the audience on a journey through the fantastic universes of some German operas, such as João e Maria, A Flauta Mágica, O Navio Phantom, among others. However, with restrictions imposed around the world to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the International Acoustics Commission (ICA) decided in late March that IYS would become a 2-year celebration of sound. This extension will allow postponed events and new events and activities scheduled for 2021 to be included in the IYS event list. In addition, the submission deadline for IYS-supported sound-themed student competitions has been extended to the end of 2020.
