  Editorial

  The Brazilian Acoustic Society - SOBRAC is created. Acoustics in our sense, will be the science of sounds, noises, vibrations,... the enhancement of what is necessary for communication and pleasant to the senses,... the prevention and control of what is harmful to people,.. .of the diagnosis and treatment of these damages when consummated. It is a vast field in which those who produce knowledge on these subjects, those who transform it and those who apply it are dispersed. They are researchers and teachers. They are designers and consultants. They are manufacturers of materials and equipment. They are installers and instrumenters. It involves the most diverse activities from the planning, use and occupation of land around an airport to the study of molecular noise.

  In Brazil, for more than two decades, we have been working occasionally in this field, in the design of auditoriums, in the treatment of industrial noise, in the control of vibrations in machines and structures, in the characterization of the acoustic performance of materials, components and systems, in the development of electroacoustic equipment and musical instruments, in mapping and proposing measures to control urban noise, in the development of hearing protectors, in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the auditory system, in the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and psychological imbalances produced by noise, etc. More recently, small, highly specialized teams have been set up, normally applied to specific industrial developments, such as noise and vibration treatment in vehicles and others. However, dispersion persists. Much work is done at the individual level or in these small teams, but little interaction occurs. Consequently, experiences are not exchanged, knowledge is not passed on, teaching is not expanded to the extent that is desirable,... , we do not add up, we do not structure ourselves in a larger, stronger organism with more possibilities, due to the vitality that flows between the parts. No, that hasn't happened..., at least until now! And if this situation persists, we will be attesting to our incomprehension, our immobility, our inability to give a little, even intuiting how much we could get back, in a context of communication and cooperation.

  The Brazilian Acoustic Society is constituted. What comes next is up to us! …
