Abstract

The search for new urban mobility solutions induced a considerable number of proposals for small electrified aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capacity (eVTOL). For urban environments such aircraft and their operations need to be regulated carefully, including aspects such as safety and noise impact. The differences with respect to conventional aircraft and their operations using conventional airports and heliports are pointed out analyzing 50 eVTOL projects concerning aspects that might be relevant for regulation. For contextualization and comparision a short overview of the current state of conventional aircraft and airport noise regulation is presented. Based on the scientific literature, whitepapers, and legal documents the current state of  regulation for eVTOL aircraft is introduced. While the regulamentation is still a matter of debate and only initial proposals are being developed, current eVTOL projects, especially for manned air transport are in line with light helicopter and tilt-rotor aircraft regulamentation. Nevertheless, blindly adopting the regulation framwork of these aircrafts might not be apropriate as noise characteristics and operations differ considerably. In this sense the authors give research suggestions to help in the regulatory process.
